Whitehaven AFC Girls section had a great day all round at the recent Northbank FC tournament in Carlisle. They finished champions in the under-10, under-12 and under-14 sections (won by their under-13s) to claim a clean sweep.

The under-10s started off slow against their hosts Northbank in the opening group game but after that they gradually improved every game, going undefeated all day.

They topped their group with some outstanding football from Eden Clark who controlled the matches in midfield, but it was player of the festival Macy Wade who didn’t put a foot wrong all day in defence and didn’t only win tackles but brought the ball out from the back and set up attacks.

The girls played another Northbank team in the semi-final and managed to win narrowly 1-0 to progress to the final. The girls dominated the final winning 3-0 with the highlight being a Messi style run from the half-way line, by Olivia Beattie, beating defenders before calmly slotting past the keeper.

The under-12 tournament saw Whitehaven continue their fantastic season. Unbeaten in their group games, a victory in the semi-final saw Whitehaven face Northbank in the final – a repeat of the recent County Cup final a few weeks prior.

A very close game needed penalties to decide the outcome, with Whitehaven keeping cool to claim victory. Special mention to Amelia Magonagle, missing from the picture, who suffered an eye injury.

The under-14 tournament had a slightly different format, played as a straight league. Both Whitehaven under-14 and under-13 teams remained unbeaten but it was the younger team who claimed the trophy by virtue of having won more of their games.

Scorers on the day for the under-13s were Emi Rudd and Sophie Douglas with special mention to Izzy Foster who claimed the under-13 girl of the tournament award.
