Cumbrian all-rounder Ben Stokes top-scored for England but couldn't prevent them from going down to a 64-run loss against Australia at the Cricket World Cup.

Stokes, from Cockermouth, struck a half-century for the second successive match in a losing cause for England as he scored 89.

Batting first, Australia got off to a superb start.

Openers Aaron Finch (100) and David Warner (53) led the way, but they then stuttered from 184-2 to 285-7 at the end of their 50 overs.

Stokes bowled six overs and ended with figures of 1-29, taking the wicket of Usman Khawaja, as England fought back.

At the start of their run-chase, England lost James Vince for a duck and Joe Root, who was dismissed for eight, quickly followed.

The writing looked to be on the wall with England 53-4, only for a 71-run partnership between Stokes and Jos Buttler to give them hope.

But Buttler was caught for 25 by Khawaja off the bowling of Marcus Stoinis and, when Stokes - who required physio treatment during his innings - failed to dig out a superb Mitchell Starc yorker with England on 177, England's slim hopes took another big hit.

Chris Woakes (26) and Adil Rashid (25) did provide some late entertainment for the home fans at Lord's today, but England now have it all to do if they are to reach the World Cup semi-finals with group games against India and New Zealand to come.
