Carlisle United have missed out on striker Jerry Yates - who has instead joined their League Two rivals Swindon.

The Robins, who are United's second opponents of the 2019/20 league campaign, have agreed a season-long loan deal with Rotherham frontman Yates.

It comes after Carlisle this morning admitted defeat in their bid to bring the Millers man back for a second spell with United.

Director of football David Holdsworth said Carlisle had made three bids for Yates but he had decided to go elsewhere - also saying the move was "down to finance".

The Cumbrians had earmarked 22-year-old Yates as a possible summer signing.

Yates said on Swindon's website he had joined the Robins because they were heading the right way.

He said: "I was buzzing when I heard of the interest.

"I was delighted so I came down, met the manager, saw the ground and was straight on the phone to my agent after saying, 'I wanted to go there because it’s going in the right direction'.

"I feel like the manager is the right man to help me progress and hopefully help the club progress so things are looking positive.”

Swindon boss Richie Wellens said Yates is a player who "has got a little bit of everything".

He added: “He had a loan spell at Carlisle which was very good for him last year – he spent the first ten or twelve games playing wide left which is not his natural position but he showed great character and attitude just to get on with the job.”

Yates will now be in line to play against United in the Blues' first away trip of the 2019/20 campaign at the County Ground on Saturday, August 10.

That comes a week after Steven Pressley's side start the season against another former loanee, when Ashley Nadesan's Crawley visit Brunton Park.
