Kells’ under-18s have made history after beating a very physical Saddleworth side to reach the final of the Lancashire Cup.

The Whitehaven youngsters withstood an onslaught from their powerful opponents, pressing the line to hang on and clinch a victory 22-20.

Kells, who trailed on a few occasions throughout the game, showed huge character and never gave up to reap the rewards.

They now await the outcome of next week’s semi-final between Leigh East and Leigh Miners to find out who will challenge them in the final.

Jacob Johnston crossed for two tries to help them reach their goal, with Mason Lewthwaite and Dan Starkie also touching down. Starkie added one goal with Cameron Taylor kicking two.

Kells spokesman Sean High said: “These lads have had a very tough and physical season so far, with the majority of them playing open age on a Saturday and under-18s on a Sunday.

“The club is immensely proud of what the team have achieved so far.”
