Carlisle Cricket Club stayed on the heels of Cumbria Cricket League Premier Division leaders Furness with a quickfire win over Workington at the Valentine Ground.

The game was over inside two hours and 15 minutes, with Carlisle cruising to an eight-wicket win after skittling Workington for 37.

Apart from being dismissed for 33 by Cleator, this was Workington’s lowest total in the last 20 years.

Fraser Conn (6-22) and professional Mike Slack (4-13) were the only bowlers needed as the hosts, who had been put into bat, were dismissed in the 26th overs.

Carlisle only needed 10 overs to get over the line with Slack unbeaten on 27 in a winning response of 38-2. Dan McDermott took both wickets for only nine runs.

Furness, though, kept their six-point advantage with a six-wicket home win against Keswick.

At one point, Keswick were 19-4 but were indebted to a fifth-wicket stand of 50 between professional Geeth Kumara (42) and James McGown (26) for steadying the ship, and 19 from Joe Grisdale got them to 127 all out in 44 overs.

Josh Shaw (3-24) and professional Sachith Pathirana (3-37) were the most successful Furness bowlers.

Champions Cockermouth had a good nine-wicket win at home to Lindal after bowling out the visitors for 160.

It looked as though it was going to be less, for Lindal were 122-9 until a last-wicket stand carried them to a more respectable total. Of the 38-run partnership for the final wicket, Craig Crawford contributed 33.

Cockermouth pro Kavishka Anjula took 4-35 while Sam Thompson had 3-45.

Opener Matthew Sempill went without scoring but Greg Platten (74 not out) and skipper Alex Grainger knocked off the runs without being parted in an unfinished stand of 161. It took them 40.5 overs.

Egremont’s only win this season came in the Higson Cup when they beat local rivals Whitehaven in a low-scoring game at Gillfoot.

They couldn’t repeat the trick at the Playground where Whitehaven won by 68 runs to keep Egremont firmly at the foot of the table.

Whitehaven pro Safyaan Sharif (58) and skipper Jonathan Stewart (23) were the main contributors to a 50-overs total of 142-9.

Coady Scott, Shane Bostock and pro Shikhar Mehta all bowled their full quota of 15 overs and took two wickets apiece. Jack Stubbings only bowled one over and took 2-2.

Egremont never got going and Elizabeth Priddle, batting at No.10, was top-scorer with the bat on 19 while opener Stubbings (16) the only other player to reach double figures. Extras top-scored with 23.

Whitehaven’s veteran Habib Baloch produced a great 15-overs spell to claim 7-39 and help reduce Egremont to 74 all out.

There was a good, fluctuating game at Wigton where visitors Cleator were successful by three wickets.

Home professional Chris Hodgson top-scored with 34 as Wigton were bowled out for 126 with James Rogers (3-16) and Darren Clark (3-50) having most success with the ball for the visitors.

Hodgson did his bit with the ball for Wigton, taking 4-44 and, at one point, Cleator looked in trouble slumping from 73-3 to 77-7.

But veteran Ian Clark (29 not out), with the help of David Glover (15no), saw Cleator through to victory on 127-7 with 6.1 overs to spare.

In a low-scoring south Cumbrian derby, Millom successfully defended a modest total of 116 to beat hosts Dalton by 21 runs.

Millom professional Sameera Sadamai hit the game’s top score of 45, with most help from Robert Thompson (27) as nobody else made double figures. For Dalton, Tony Butler took 4-22 and professional Lasith Waduge had 3-31.

In reply, Dalton were bowled out for 95 with Graham Dawson taking 5-29.
