Carlisle United will face promoted Tranmere Rovers in a pre-season friendly at Brunton Park, it has been confirmed.

Steven Pressley's side will take on Micky Mellon's League Two play-off winners on Tuesday, July 23, with a 7.30pm kick-off.

It will be the Blues' penultimate warm-up game ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, and is likely to be the last of three home friendlies in their pre-season programme.

Mellon's side clinched a second successive promotion with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory against Newport at Wembley last Saturday.

Connor Jennings' late goal saw the Wirral outfit return to League One.

Rovers' squad includes the former United defender Mark Ellis, who was a key part of their promotion-winning side until a cruciate knee ligament injury curtailed his campaign in April.

Tranmere did the double over Carlisle in their League Two promotion season, winning 2-0 at Brunton Park last September before a 3-0 triumph at Prenton Park in March.

Carlisle have one more date to fill in their pre-season calendar - Saturday, July 27, which is likely to be an away game on the final weekend before the start of the league campaign.

Their other confirmed friendlies are: Hibernian (home, July 9), Penrith (away, July 13), Chester (away, July 16) and Fleetwood (home, July 20).
