Stanwix Ladies FC excelled in the Costa Daurada Cup tournament, less than a week after being presented with the Lancashire FA Women’s League One Championship trophy.

A trip around Barcelona FCs Nou Camp stadium set up a memorable weekend where the ladies exceeded all expectations to reach the plate final.

This hugely successful tournament attracts teams from all over the globe, from as far away as China, the US and Africa.

After an opening defeat in a closely-fought game against Spanish outfit CF Martorell, Stanwix went on to beat Catalan team CF La Selva Del Camp 4-0, with goals from Bea Barber, Ashleigh Mitchell, Laura Webster and Abby Walls.

After another win against Spanish team CF Ullastrell, where Ashleigh Mitchell and Barber scored in a 2-0 win, the Carlisle-based team found themselves in the final of the plate.

The final was a very close encounter that could of gone either way but Spanish side CD Ugao went 1-0 up against the run of play late in the first half, and finished 2-0 winners with a late free-kick from just outside the area.

Coach Paul Mason said: “Along with fellow coach Derek Elliot, we are hugely proud of what they have achieved. The standard of football at the tournament was on another level and, to be honest, we didn’t have any expectations of reaching a final which goes to show the quality, dedication and potential we have in this squad.

“Everyone will remember this experience, including the Nou Camp tour, for many years to come.”
