Workington Town director of rugby Gary Murdock believes his players will do themselves proud when they get to Headingley tonight.

It will be a tough ask against the Super League giants Leeds Rhinos, in the fifth-round Coral Challenge Cup tie but Murdock believes his players are up to the job.

And he thinks the away day is a just reward to the Town faithful who are set to follow them down to Yorkshire.

“We have seven coaches going down to Leeds, which is just fantastic,” said Murdock, who took over the role at Derwent Park in February.

“Away days like these are worth all the hard work – to get a draw like this is just great.

“It would have been good to get them at home but I think this is a great reward to our faithful fans to have a day out like this. And it is fantastic for us and the players to go out on a big stage like Headingley.”

And is this the right time to play Leeds as they languish at the bottom of the Super League table? Could an upset be on the cards tonight?

“Who knows?” he added. “But we have got some problems ourselves with players injured.

“It would have been nice to go down there at full strength but I am sure the lads will all give 110 per cent and they will do us proud.”

Murdock was at Derwent Park on Wednesday to watch the highly-successful coaching camp, run by the two clubs for local youngsters and he said it was inspiring to see nearly 70 kids out on the field.

“It is a major boost to see how many kids are down here, it’s just phenomenal,” he added.

And he admitted he was pleased to be back in rugby league at this level, despite the pressures of the role.

He said: “It is hard work and all-time-consuming and more difficult than I thought it would be... but by the same touch it is really good fun.

“And it is just nice to be back and involved in the game at this level.”
