Double Olympic gold medal cyclist Philip Hindes will be at Carlisle Squash Club today.
This week, the club announced the 26-year-old will be at the Warwick Road venue and will be presenting prizes to the finalists at Carlisle’s club championships.
Paul Bell and Adam Goad, who is competing in a different competition this weekend, are both not involved but one of Carlisle’s coaches, Dave Box, still thinks plenty of talent will be on show.
“Young Joseph Broadley has had two seasons of injuries so, playing-wise, he is not just quite up to the same standard of Adam yet,” he said.
“But if everything went right for him, he could do well. Ben Hetherington is training ridiculously hard at the moment, and he has been for a couple of seasons now and, in Adam’s absence, I’d suggest Ben has a good chance and it’ll be great if he wins because he has worked tremendously hard.”
Box is also pleased with the number of newcomers who have taken up squash in the past year, and hopes they watch the championship finals.
He said: “For about a year now, I have been running two groups at Carlisle on a Monday and a Wednesday night.
"We’ve had anything between 18-20 people show up, and the idea is just to encourage them and bring some through. We’ve had a lot of people who have played in an event for the first time in the past year, and they have brought their wife and their kids, so it’s helped the club to have a nice feel.”
