Stanwix Football Club’s Ladies team are looking forward to picking up the Lancashire County League One trophy.

They travelled to Manchester last Saturday to take part in the FA People’s Cup regional semi-finals, narrowly missing out on a place in the national finals, before defeating Galgate Ladies to be confirmed as league champions. They won the league in some style, too, claiming an 11-0 victory at Galgate.

“It was nice to get promotion confirmed,” said Paul Mason who coaches the team alongside Derek Elliot.

“The team that we played have struggled, but they have done well to get through the season. They had a number of players poached from another club. But we got the game won and got the three points we needed.”

Stanwix, who are also set to play at the Costa Daurada Cup in Barcelona over the Easter weekend, will visit Fleetwood Town Wrens in their last league fixture of the season on April 14.

And Mason, whose daughter Sophie plays for the team, admits he expects that to be an enjoyable day for the club.

He said: “That should be a good day. It will be good to be presented with the trophy. They [Fleetwood] play in a little non-league stadium, so it’s a good set-up there.”

Such has been Stanwix’s success this season, they even gave North West Division One North outfit Workington Reds a run for their money in the Cumberland Cup, narrowly losing their quarter-final 4-3 in February with Reds now in the final.

“It shows where we are, standard-wise. It’s shows we are a club that’s growing,” Mason added.
