A moment that has lost none of its magic – and the man who made it happen – were celebrated in style at Carlisle United tonight.

Jimmy Glass was back at Brunton Park for a special event to mark the 20th anniversary of his legendary goal.

The former goalkeeper took to the stage at a sell-out Q&A event at Foxy’s Restaurant to relive one of United’s most iconic moments.

Glass, who was followed by a Sky Sports team making a documentary about the goal, also signed autographs for adoring fans who shared their memories of the unforgettable afternoon of May 8, 1999.

He said: “How often have I seen the goal since then? Only once or twice…a day!”

Also involved in the Q&A, hosted by BBC Radio Cumbria’s Mike Zeller, was ex-captain David Brightwell, who scored United’s first goal that day, and Graham Anthony, who took the corner from which Glass scored his injury-time winner against Plymouth which kept the Blues in the Football League.

Tannoy announcer Colin Carter and BBC Radio Cumbria co-commentator Graham Moss also took part – while the audience of about 150 people watched specially recorded video messages from Carlisle-born Steve McCall, who played for Plymouth that day, and referee Frazer Stretton.

Carlisle United Supporters’ Groups organised the night in conjunction with the club, chair Simon Clarkson saying proceeds would go towards improving disabled facilities at United, while Eden Valley Hospice would also benefit.

United’s London Branch supporters’ club were selling commemorative t-shirts from which £1 for each one sold will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association in memory of late Blues hero Tony Hopper, who played in the game.

A framed shirt signed by Glass was auctioned for £200 to benefit the hospice.
