Steve Swinglehurst gives everything for the Annan Athletic cause, according to boss Peter Murphy.

The former Carlisle United centre-back helped steer the Galabankies to a 3-1 home win over second-placed Edinburgh City last Saturday, scoring Annan’s second, and will hope to guide Athletic to another victory at Clyde in their latest Scottish League Two fixture today (3pm kick-off).

And there has been cause for more celebration for the 26-year-old this week after Annan announced he is due to become a father.

Swinglehurst netted at Galabank at the weekend with a powerful header from Chris Johnston’s corner after Aidan Smith had scored one penalty but missed another, before Christian Nade made sure of the points.

“It was a great goal. Steve Swinglehurst gives you everything,” said Carlisle favourite Murphy.

“He has been excellent for us this season, along with the other lads. But the delivery from Chris Johnston put it right into the middle.

“The character of the boys, against the team that are second in the table who have been top, to go ‘right, we are going to take the game to them’ was great.

“So, I’m delighted with the 3-1 win, but it could have been more – Dave Wilson hits the bar with a free-kick, Aidan Smith missed a penalty but, overall, it was very good.”

In-form Annan face another tough test at the Broadwood Stadium where they will come up against Danny Lennon’s men who are third, eight points ahead of the Galabankies, after they won 2-0 against Elgin City on Tuesday evening. Jack Boyle and Scott Rumsby were both on target.

When asked if there was anyone in the league who his troops should fear, former Republic of Ireland international Murphy said: “No, but every side poses different problems and we need to adapt.”
