Workington Town are continuing to strengthen their links with the local amateur game - by introducing a new initiative.

The Derwent Park side has come up with a new venture called the Workington Town Community Club Takeover.

It will see a local community club literally takeover the club for a day.

Maryport ARLFC were the first local club to accept Town’s invitation.

Players of all ages will proudly don their club colours, get free entry to this Sunday’s game against Newcastle Thunder, enjoy their own reserved area to watch the match, play in a curtain-raiser at half-time and unveil the club crest flags of both sides.

A club statement said: “Maryport have this season worked hard to re-enter the Cumberland ARL league open age in a positive move for rugby league in our area.

“The club has always been a strong source of players for the semi-professional game and in recent years have produced the likes of current Town prop Stevie Scholey who has been with his old club this week taking training sessions with the kids.”

Workington are hoping that more clubs in the area will follow suit and take part in the takeover days this season.

The invitation is extended to all local clubs in the area. If you would like to book your club in for a takeover, email graemepeerstownrlfc@gmail.com or gmworkingtontown@yahoo.com.
