Former Carlisle United loan midfielder Adam Clayton was among the scorers as Middlesbrough beat Carlisle United 3-0 in a reserve friendly.

Clayton, who played on loan at Brunton Park during the 2009/10 season, scored for Boro, as did Northern Ireland international Paddy McNair and Under-23 striker Mitchell Curry while United fielded a mixture of youth and senior players.

Keeper Louis Gray, centre-back Peter Grant, fit-again Jason Kennedy, George Glendon, teenage winger Liam McCarron, Connor Simpson and Nathan Thomas all started for the Blues as they were given valuable game time.

Jarrad Branthwaite, who signed professional terms with Carlisle last week, also played the full 90 minutes. But midfielder Mike Jones didn't feature.

Appleby lad McCarron went the closest of all the Cumbrians' players to finding the net as he hit the bar in the first half.

Marcus Tavernier, Rajiv van La Parra, Jordan Hugill and Rudy Gestede were among the other Middlesbrough first-team players to feature in the game which was played at Rockliffe Park.
