A pistol shooter from a Carlisle club has been celebrating after she beat her own Scottish record in Poland.

Jess Liddon, of The Cumberland News Rifle Club, set a new personal best of 576 points at the Wroclaw Grand Prix in the women’s 25m pistol category.

Then, on the second day of the competition, Liddon put in a score of 571 to qualify for a second final in sixth.

In those 25m pistol finals, Liddon - originally from Lockerbie who works for BAE Systems in Barrow - came seventh twice.

She competed in the 10m air pistol category, too, narrowly missing out on a place in the final in that particular event as she came ninth at the event which took place on February 9 and February 10.

David Owen, who coaches Liddon at the city’s rifle club which is based at the Sheepmount Stadium, said: “Jess walked away with a Scottish record and she is on the up and up.

“It was excellent. She managed to get into two finals, as well, which is no mean feat.

"She was shooting against Olympic shooters and world champions. It was a very high standard, there.

“Jess chose Poland because she can shoot in the 25m pistol category twice in two competitions because, ordinarily, you can only shoot this pistol once.

“But she has taken full advantage.

“For her to get into two finals against the best of the best is great for her.”

Liddon, who came 10th in the 25m women’s pistol and 13th in the women’s air pistol at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, last year, is now doing some of her training in Hungary as well as in the UK.

“We have got her a coach [Sonal Győrik-Ramendra] who she goes to train with. It’s full-on over a weekend on a Saturday and a Sunday out there,” said Owen who himself competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the 10m air pistol.

Liddon leads a crop of talented young shooters who are coming through the ranks at The Cumberland News Rifle Club.

Sisters Kerstin and Kyla Dodd, from Dumfries, also compete for the club.

And Owen is hoping others at the club will take inspiration from what Liddon has achieved.

He said: “This is what you can do with lots of hard work.”
