Workington Reds have finally drawn a line under the Gavin Skelton saga with Carlisle United.

The Borough Park club has had the initial payment they made in compensation returned to them.

Skelton was appointed manager at the turn of the year but his second reign in charge lasted only six days.

Reds had agreed a compensation package with United after Skelton had left his position with the youth set-up at Brunton Park.

However, following his resignation, Reds have been involved in further discussions with Carlisle over the compensation.

Now, the board of Workington AFC have confirmed that “the financial situation pertaining to the recent appointment of Gavin Skelton, and his subsequent return to Carlisle United, has been resolved.”

A brief statement added: “Following negotiations with CUFC, we have ensured that any money initially paid out by the club have been returned and we now regard the matter as closed.”

Skelton had returned to his old job at Brunton Park and his swift departure coincided with the departure of United manager John Sheridan.

At the time, some bookies made Skelton favourite to succeed him. Subsequently, Skelton returned to his former role in the youth department.

Skelton had been brought in at Borough Park following the resignation of joint manager Dave Hewson.

But after his swift departure Lee Andrews, joint manager with Hewson, who had been named as assistant manager to Skelton, took over the reins.

Twelve points adrift of Evo-Stik Premier safety at one point, three wins in a row raised hopes of avoiding the drop but two successive home defeats have kept Reds second bottom.

Tomorrow, they travel to Marine who have fought their way out of relegation trouble since the New Year.
