Wigton Rugby Club convincingly clinched fourth place in Cumbria League One with an emphatic 62-0 home win over Hawcoat Park.

It was their best performance of the season as they scored a number of splendid tries as they swept aside the visitors’ challenge in style.

This was despite a number of handicapping factors.

Firstly, there was the weather, which didn’t exactly make for fast open rugby, but some of Wigton’s handling could not have been bettered on the calmest of balmy days. Secondly, Wigton made light of the 11-1 penalty count against them, and finally, the 62 points were scored despite referee Alistair Jones calling an end to proceedings after just 23 minutes of the second half.

Everyone played a part in the Wigton victory with the forwards dominating the scrum and making ground with almost every carry, while the backs handled and ran with a flair and accuracy that had gone missing in recent weeks.

Greg Wrathall led the way for Wigton with a hat-trick of tries, with Lewis Plackett and Elliot Armstrong dotting down twice, while John Wright, Richard Moffatt and Josh Leeson also were on the scoresheet.

In equally appalling conditions, Aspatria and Cockermouth went the distance but it was much tighter before the Black Reds clawed out a 14-5 win.

Jack Clegg was key for Aspatria and, despite Ben Irving’s unconverted try for Cockermouth before half-time, the Black Reds held on for the win.

Keswick finished the season’s first phase as league leaders after they beat Whitehaven 19-8 in the final game.

It meant Whitehaven missed out on a top-four spot, finishing fifth.

In the other game, also in Whitehaven, St Benedict’s beat Upper Eden 19-13 but stay bottom, a point behind both Saturday’s opponents and Hawcoat Park.
