Gavin Skelton is under no illusions about the task he faces at Workington Reds – with league points the priority.

With Reds languishing just one place above the foot of the table, Skelton has returned to take the reins at Borough Park and try and drag the side out of the relegation battle.

And tomorrow’s trip will be key as they head into a crunch clash at struggling Stafford Rangers.

Skelton took charge of his first game on New Year’s Day, with the side losing 2-1 at home to Stalybridge Celtic, with Gari Rowntree and Dan Wordsworth also seeing red to complicate matters further.

“I might look at making a few changes for Stafford,” admitted Skelton. “I was really pleased with the effort and attitude in general in the last game, there is definitely something there to build on. But obviously we need points.

“The team I put out will be the team I believe can win that game. We are in a situation where I have come in and not had time to look at everyone but next week we will be back in training and they will all have a chance to impress.”

One welcome boost tomorrow will be the return of defender Josh Calvert but he is still without Kyle May and Matty Douglas, who are serving the last game of their three-match suspensions.

“Josh will give us a much needed boost. I know him from the previous time I was here and he did well for me,” said Skelton.

“Kyle and Matty will miss tomorrow’s game and, when they return the following week, we will lose Gari Rowntree and Dan Wordsworth after their red cards on Tuesday so that will be pretty much a straight swap.”

Skelton admitted discipline needs working on and avoiding key errors that have led to Workington losing games.

“If we don’t turn up to games or we make basic errors, then it will cost us,” said Skelton.
