Cumbria's netball star Helen Housby enjoyed double delight at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

At the event taking place at the Genting Arena in Birmingham, Carlisle-born Housby, crowned Cumbria's Sports Personality of the Year last month, and her England team-mates, were crowned Team of the Year for claiming Commonwealth Games gold this year.

The 23-year-old, from Drumleaning, near Wigton, a former Nelson Thomlinson School pupil, also helped England's netball team claim the Moment of the Year award for sinking the shot that saw England beat hosts Australia 52-51 in the final and earn them Commonwealth gold for the first time ever.

"What just happened," Housby said on her Instagram account.

"BBC SPOTY Team of the Year AND Moment of the Year.

"I am dreaming right now!"

She added: "[I] never, ever thought this would happen in my lifetime, overwhelmed with happiness and love for this team."

Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2018 after becoming only the third Brit to win the race, after Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.

In a public vote, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton finished second while Tottenham footballer Harry Kane was third.

Sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, England cricketer Jimmy Anderson and skeleton's Lizzy Yarnold were also shortlisted for the main award.

Elsewhere, England football manager Gareth Southgate was crowned Coach of the Year after taking the Three Lions to the World Cup Semi-Final this year, where they were beaten 2-1 by Croatia in Russia.
