Workington Reds hero Paul Stewart has been back in west Cumbria to talk about the sexual abuse he suffered as a young footballer.

Stewart was with two other former professional footballers who took part in the Safeguarding in Excellence seminar, held in Cockermouth.

The event was organised by the Cumberland FA and delivered by SAVE (Safeguarding and Victim Engagement), with Derek Bell and David White joining Stewart on stage.

Stewart had a key role with Reds when they bounced back as champions of the North Western Trains League in 1999.

Each player took turns to tell emotional stories of the sexual and physical abuse they endured, over several years, as young boys in a football environment.

Two years ago when the story first broke, Stewart said he was abused up to the age of 15 and said his attacker got away with it by threatening to kill his relatives if he ever mentioned it.

Workington director Steve Durham said: "It was powerful stuff and brave of a trio of well-known footballers, now in their fifties, to relate some very distressing experiences.

"Afterwards, David White delivered an informative presentation on the way forward to eradicate such abuse, not only in football, but other high-profile sports and life in general.

"Away from the emotion of the discussions, it was great to catch up with Paul and reminisce about his time at the club."
