Reds joint boss Dave Hewson knows that it’s points, not necessarily performances, which will spark a rise up the table.

Workington went down 2-1 at Matlock on Saturday to remain entrenched in the bottom three in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

It came after another spirited display but failed to provide much-needed points.

Hewson said: "I can’t fault the lads for effort as they all put it in but we need points, not just performances.

"We created enough chances in the second half to have won the game.

"Alright, the keeper [Ross Durrant] was their man-of-the-match but, if we had been a bit more clinical, we could have won the game.

"I can’t complain about their first goal. Sometimes, you just have to hold up your hand and say that was a really well-worked and taken goal.

"But I was disappointed we couldn’t clear or block the second one after it fell to their player in the box.

"In many ways, it was a continuation of the form we showed in beating Stalybridge and Hednesford, but it didn’t get us any points."

Reds were without Dan Wordsworth (ribs) after he failed a late fitness test at Causeway Lane, but Hewson expects him back for the next game, an FA Trophy tie at home to Ramsbottom on Saturday.

Josh Calvert, who missed the game with a heel injury, might be a bit longer before he’s back.

The Reds management team will have noted that, on Saturday, Ramsbottom won 2-0 at Kidsgrove, the team who beat the Cumbrians in an FA Cup replay.

Meanwhile, the Reds will be holding their annual shareholders meeting tonight in the Borough Park Social Club (7pm).

The balance sheet reveal a loss for the year of £10,940 which is considerably down on the 2017 figure of £29,581.

Two of the six directors, Don Blackwell and Steve Durham, are up for re-election.
