Carlisle-born Helen Housby and her England netball team-mates have been crowned BT Sport Team of the Year.

Housby, 23, from Drumleaning, near Wigton, enjoyed her moment of glory at this April’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, as she sunk the shot that saw England beat host nation Australia 52-51 in the final and earn England Commonwealth gold for the first time ever.

The Roses beat Chelsea FC Women and the GB Athletics 4x100m relay team to the gong.

“We feel so privileged to have won this award,” said Natalie Haythornthwaite, one of Housby’s Commonwealth Games-winning team-mates.

“It’s awesome to get recognition for what we achieved out on the Gold Coast. We are honoured, thank you to everyone for their support.”

The award comes for England’s netballers after Housby was named Cumbria Sports Personality of the Year at Friday’s event at Windermere’s Low Wood Bay Resort and Spa with her sister, Mel, on hand to pick up her award with Helen in England action.
