Cumbrian runner Charlotte Arter has been selected in British Athletics' European Cross Country Championship team.

At the competition in Tilburg, The Netherlands on December 9, Arter, from Stockdalewath near Dalston, will be a part of Britain's 40-strong team.

The British team, announced today, has enjoyed a rich vein of success at these championships, having topped the medal table in 11 of the previous 12 championships.

Arter will head into the European event on the back of claiming the Liverpool Cross Challenge women's title on Saturday.

After that race, Arter, 27, told Athletics Weekly: "I missed last year’s Euro Cross because I had an Achilles injury and I wasn’t in shape, but I made the team in 2016 and it’s a real joy to be back in the British team and earn another British vest.

"The aim was to qualify and now I can set my sights high.

"As a team, we’ve had great success in the past and, hopefully, I can play a part in that this year and finish as high as I can individually."

British Athletics team leader Rob Denmark said: "Following on from such competitive trials at the weekend in Liverpool, we are able to select an incredibly strong team to travel out to Tilburg.

"We have been fortunate enough to enjoy a great deal of success at these championships in recent years and I’m hoping that this year we will continue to challenge for individual and team medals."
