Workington Reds have registered Sean Paterson ahead of their FA Trophy tie at Stalybridge Celtic.

Scotland-born Paterson, 31, has been based in the Furness area, reviving his career with Vickerstown in the West Lancashire League.

Recommended by Reds striker Jason Walker, Paterson trained with the squad on Wednesday night and did enough to convince joint managers Dave Hewson and Lee Andrews that he had plenty to offer.

Particularly impressed with his attitude and desire to return to football at this level, it was a formality to ask secretary Alec Graham to sort out the registration.

Reds had until midday yesterday to complete the paperwork for Paterson to be eligible for this afternoon (3pm kick-off) and for any replay on Tuesday.

Workington were unlucky 1-0 losers at Bower Fold in the league on August 27 but have a good record against Celtic in knockout competitions.

Defender Dan Wordsworth, who missed Saturday’s 4-1 defeat by Grantham because of suspension, is available again but Matty Douglas continues to be sidelined because of a groin problem.

Reds are one of seven Northern Premier League sides still involved in the FA Trophy which has reduced today’s Premier Division programme to seven games.

It does mean that Reds will have to play catch-up in the league.

Apart from Witton (14), they have played fewer league games than everyone else, having only completed 15 fixtures so far this term. Witton are also still involved in the FA Trophy.

Meanwhile, Allerdale Borough Council has organised a planning public consultation for the new stadium project for both Reds and Workington Town.

The council said: "The purpose of the public consultation is to ensure that everyone can provide feedback on the design, the scheme, and the overall proposal, to help shape and design the stadium for the community.

"This feedback is reviewed by the project team as part of the design process to ensure that the development balances the needs of the community, the environment, and the client."

The public consultation event is being held at the Workington Leisure Centre, Griffin Street, Workington on Tuesday, December 4, from 1pm until 8pm.
