New Workington Town signing Ryan Fieldhouse has his sights set firmly on one thing – promotion to the Championship.

Fieldhouse joined the west Cumbrians on a two-year contract this week after three successful years with Championship outfit Barrow Raiders.

"I was in the Barrow team that was promoted to the Championship and the prospect of doing that with another Cumbrian team was one of the reasons I signed for Town," said the 30-year-old full-back.

"I was in the process of looking for another club after three great years with Barrow and I have always been in touch with Ollie Wilkes [Town skipper] who I played with in Barrow.

"He knew I was a free agent and the next thing I knew, coach Leon Pryce was on the phone, asking if I’d be interested in signing for Workington.

"I want to help make Derwent Park a fortress, a tough place for teams to come and a place where teams don’t want to come.

"We start pre-season training on Tuesday and I’m ready to rip in.

"There will be four or five teams battling it out in League One next season and, if we get complacent and don’t turn up for games, it’s going to be very tough.

"We have to go into the games in the right frame of mind."

And Fieldhouse is also looking forward to learning from Pryce who, in his first season as a coach, took Workington to the verge of promotion.

"Leon’s been there, done it and worn the tee-shirt," said Fieldhouse.

"In his first season, he was very unlucky.

"But’s he’s created something a little bit special and has attracted some good players to add to the local talent he has.

"I can’t wait to be a part of it."

Fieldhouse, son of former GB and Warrington star John, won’t be a stranger in the Workington camp.

"I also know Penky [Sean Penkywicz], who lives close to me, and Andrew Dawson and Joe Hambley who I played with at Barrow," he added.

Fieldhouse works for an industrial cleaning company and also owns a nutrition company.
