Workington's Dave Hewson admits he and Lee Andrews are running out of time as Reds slipped deeper into trouble on Saturday.

A 4-1 home defeat by Grantham Town was Reds’ heaviest of the season as they stayed next to bottom of Evo-Stik Premier and without a league win since September 1.

The west Cumbrians only have North Ferriby below them and are seven points from safety, although they do have games in hand on all but one of the teams ahead of them.

Hewson said: "We know that time is not on our side in turning things round but I still believe that we can do it.

"It doesn’t help with results that we experienced against Grantham. We just seem to collapse when we concede and not enough people are strong enough to stand-up and be outed in those circumstances.

"We just can’t produce consistent performances.

"We were all pleased with how we had played and scored five goals in midweek in the FA Trophy but, despite starting well, we couldn’t repeat it.

"The first 30 minutes was good, playing on the front foot as we wanted, but we just didn’t get the goals we needed. Once a goal goes in against us, we are in trouble."

Reds are not in league action for a fortnight, when they are at Borough Park again with Hednesford as the visitors.

In between, they visit Evo-Stik Premier rivals Stalybridge in the FA Trophy.

Without a league win since September 1, Reds have earned four victories in knock-out football – two in the FA Cup and two in the FA Trophy.

Meanwhile, Reds have put in seven days notice on an experienced midfield player, currently operating in the West Lancashire League but who has played at a higher level.

They should know by Wednesday if the player is interested in joining their fight for Evo-Stik survival.
