Former Carlisle United and Workington Reds frontman Glenn Murray insists he will never lose his goal-scoring instinct after agreeing a new deal at Brighton.

The 35-year-old, from Maryport, potentially has until the end of next season to become Albion’s highest scorer in the top flight after he signed a contract extension which will see him stay with the Seagulls until the end of next season.

Murray has 18 Premier League goals for Brighton and 100 in total for the club.

He said: "I don’t think my hunger in front of goal will ever dwindle - even when I’m very, very old.

"I think I’ll still celebrate scoring goals in the back garden with the kids when I’m retired!"

Murray continues to be the main man in attack for Albion. But the west Cumbrian’s first goal will be to ensure the Seagulls are still in the top flight next term.

He added: "I believe I deserve this and obviously the club feel exactly the same, otherwise they wouldn’t have rewarded me with a new contract.

"My form has got a part to play in the circumstances.

"If I remained professional, trained well, played well and did the right things on the field, even if the goals weren’t coming, I still believe the club would have given me this contract."

Murray, who signed his one-year contract extension on Tuesday, welcomed his new deal but says he was not losing any sleep over his long-term future.

"It’s very nice to have the security, especially when my family are based here. That’s a big thing for me," he said.

"It wasn’t something I was losing sleep over. I was fully focused on the season as a whole and trying to keep Brighton in the Premier League.

"But it’s nice to put the next year to bed and know that I’ll be here at the club, hopefully playing in the Premier League again."

Boss Chris Hughton said to the club website: "We are delighted to have extended Glenn’s contract.

"He has proved a vital member of the team and his goals have been crucial to us. Glenn has scored consistently for us, first in helping us win promotion, and now in the Premier League as we seek to establish ourselves at the top level."

Murray could catch Michael Robinson, who remains the club’s leading top-tier scorer with 37 goals.

Andy Ritchie (23) and Peter Ward (19) are well within his sights and he has already moved level with Gordon Smith. Tommy Cook remains the club’s all-time leading scorer with 123 goals.

Brighton are 12th in the Premier League table with 14 points from 12 league fixtures.

After the international break this weekend, the Seagulls host Leicester on November 24.
