Swindon have confirmed the appointment of Richie Wellens as their new manager - four days before their clash with Carlisle United.

The Blues' trip to Wiltshire this weekend will be Wellens' first game in charge of the Robins.

It comes after the former Oldham boss signed a deal until May 2020 as successor to Phil Brown, who was sacked on Sunday along with his No2, the ex-United boss Neil McDonald.

Former Ireland international Noel Hunt has been been appointed as Wellens' assistant at he County Ground.

Swindon are 17th in League Two.

Wellens said on Swindon's website: "It’s a great opportunity to manage a football club that is well-run, has a good infrastructure, and a tradition, over the last six or seven years, of playing a style that I want to play.

"I want to get the ball down, play positive, quick, passing football and bring results and success to this football club, because at this moment it is underachieving.

"I’ll meet the players and as quickly as possible, make them feel comfortable. They had a good weekend result [a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup against York] and I want to continue that confidence – Thursday, Friday, we’ll look ahead to the Carlisle game."
