Chairman John Mackay hopes beating Evo-Stik Northern Premier League leaders Scarborough Athletic will have boosted confidence as Workington Reds look to break their winless streak in league action today.

Reds travel to the Don Amott Arena to take on Mickleover Sports (3pm kick-off), searching for their first league win since September 1.

They have found goals hard to come by so far this season but Mackay believes that is purely down to confidence and hopes Saturday’s FA Trophy win will have increased that as Reds look to climb the table with three points this afternoon.

“Beating the team that’s top of the league has got to give you confidence,” he said.

“It was a gritty performance and well-earned in a hard-fought game. We matched them in every department and I don’t think they had a single shot on target that was worthy of note.

“We weren’t at our best but we managed to get the goal through Scotty [Allison] and maybe there was a bit of a deflection but they all count.

“It’s fine saying there’s a long way to go before the end of the season but we don’t want to be down there for much longer; we want to be well out of it and towards mid-table with, hopefully, a good run in the FA Trophy.”

Despite Reds’ struggles in front of goal, Mackay believes with proven scorers like Jason Walker, Allison and Conor Tinnion in the side, they will not be waiting long for the goals to come.

“Jason will be disappointed because he started well but has had a barren spell,” Mackay added. “All good centre forwards come back, they don’t stay goalless for long.

“It’s that little bit of luck; he hit the post the other week and the difference is an inch here or there.

“He’s scored some good goals for Reds already and I’m sure he’ll score many more.”

Mackay also hopes the return of Josh Calvert and Sam Smith from injury will continue to shore up the defence and keep the goals out at the other end.

He said: “Things have been difficult at the club with injuries but we’ve got those two lads coming back and they’re both influential.

“Nothing seems to be going our way at the moment because we had hoped to get them playing in a reserve game last night but the weather put a stop to that.”

Like Reds, Mickleover are languishing at the wrong end of the table and are in 18th place but sit three places and four points above the west Cumbrians having played two games more.

And like Reds, Mickleover progressed in the FA Trophy last time out.
