Carlisle Rugby Club is about to add another international to its honours board.

Alongside the likes of Chris Wardlow and Ian Hunter will be Eddie Faulder, a 26-year-old forward who is set to make his Cyprus debut.

Faulder, whose maternal grandmother was a Greek Cypriot, has been called into the squad in Pathos to play Israel on Saturday, November 10.

The Cypriots are hoping to bounce back after a 46-24 defeat to Croatia in Split on October 20.

Faulder, head chef at the Queen Inn, Great Corby will fly out next Wednesday to join the squad in preparation for the latest game in the European Championship.

"My cousin Cameron Brown, who lives in Swindon, has been part of the Cyprus set-up for a little while and it was when I was talking to him, that he said they were desperately short of tight-head props," Faulder said.

"When he mentioned me to the coaches, I was invited to join the squad for this next international and, naturally, I’m hoping to be involved.

"My grandmother met my grandfather when he was serving with the British Army during the troubles and they later married. She died in 2013 but would have been very proud that I had been asked to represent Cyprus."

Faulder started playing rugby at Carlisle when he was six, and was playing in the 1st XV at 18.

But at 21, he was injured in a car crash and he suffered a broken hip which put him out of the game for a while.

He later spent time in Australia and, since returning, has really been concentrating on his career, which meant his rugby has been limited to 2nd XV appearances for Carlisle.

He’s fit and raring to go, though, hoping to be given the chance of a first international cap.

Cyprus has only been playing international rugby since 2007 but in that first season beat Azerbaijan, Monaco and Slovakia to win the FIRA 3D Tournament, a great achievement in their first year.

Cyprus now play in the Conference One South after being promoted last season and that opening defeat was against a Croatian side which has won all four matches. After Israel, Cyprus have to play Malta, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

There’s a certain Great Corby chef who hopes he can provide the right ingredients to make it a successful conclusion to their first season at this level.
