The return of Kyle May has been a huge boost to the Workington Reds defence, says joint boss Dave Hewson.

Not only has he bolstered the backline, Hewson says he also brings on the players around him.

And with the like of Josh Calvert and Sam Smith also returning to the fray, Hewson says his defence is finally all coming together.

"Kyle’s been massive, just what I expected having spoken to him," said Hewson.

"The first conversation I had with him was about how keen and eager he was to get back in and how he felt like he could still give something at this level.

"I knew straight away from then that he was going to be an asset coming in. He’s been rock solid but, also, I think he has brought on other peoples’ games, as well.

"I think Goose [Dan Wordsworth] has probably been our most consistent and outstanding performer so far this season. As a pair, not many get past them.

"You wouldn’t fancy coming up against them two every week and, with Matty Douglas and Gari Rowntree on either side, we have a very experienced, solid, back four with the best keeper in the league, as far as I’m concerned behind them."

The return of the injured Calvert and Smith has finally given competition for places in the Reds ranks, which Hewson says is key to boost performances.

"It’s what we have been waiting for, for the squad to finally be together," he added, ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Mickleover Sports.

"It gives us options and brings back competition for places. Sam and Josh are not young lads anymore, they are experienced players at this level.

"They know how to play this level and they are a massive boost to the squad. It sets us up well for the coming weeks."

Reds youngster Leo Holliday has been playing for Northern League side Penrith in recent weeks.

And Hewson has now agreed that the Reserve player will concentrate solely on featuring for the Bonny Blues for the foreseeable future, so won’t feature for Workington during his time at Frenchfield.

"He is getting guaranteed game time with Penrith at the moment and that will help his progress," said Hewson.
