Any fears that Workington’s players weren’t behind the management team were dispelled by a committed display at Nantwich Town.

Reds earned their second away point at the Weaver Stadium and it could have been even better.

Joint bosses Dave Hewson and Lee Andrews, preparing for a run of three successive games against teams in the top five, were given a timely reminder that the team is united.

Hewson said: "We spent time talking with the players and asking for a concentrated effort with everyone focused on their jobs in the team.

"We know that when all the players are at it we have a good team but, so far, several of them have just not quite been at their best.

"It was a hard place to come because Nantwich are a good team. They are up there in the top five for a reason, and we were very pleased with the response we got from our players.

"There were chances for us to win the game but we also had to dig in for a spell late in the game and there was some brave defending."

Hewson acknowledged there were some outstanding performances in what was essentially a good all-round team effort.

But he had special praise for Jordan Holt and Jamie Mellen who formed a new partnership in the centre of midfield.

"I reckon Sean Cooke is a very good player who makes Nantwich tick and we asked Jamie to look after him and nullify the threat which he did very effectively," said Hewson.

"It was very hard to pick a man of the match because there were several candidates but I think I would go for Jordan.

"It hasn’t been easy this season in his two months because he did have an injury which held him back and he’s also been asked to play out of his favourite position.

"But this time he was more like he Jordan we saw last season, full of energy up and down the pitch.

"He is coming to the end of his loan spell and we will be talking with Carlisle and Jordan about what happens now."

Reds are back in action tomorrow night at home to Farsley Celtic who drew at Stalybridge 2-2 on Saturday.

Then it’s the FA Trophy action on Saturday with leaders Scarbrough Athletic visiting Borough Park.

"We are looking to follow-up on Tuesday and try and get an unbeaten run going to make progress up the league. That performance at Nantwich should have boosted confidence because we played well and matched a top-five side," said Hewson.
