Border City ABC’s fighters enjoyed a successful weekend on the road.

On Saturday night, two of the Carlisle club’s senior boxers, Tom Greenwood and Phil Howell, claimed respective victories on the Coastal ABC show in Morecambe against Fin Bolgner and Liam Boertein.

Then, the following day, Border City’s North West champion Lewis Taylor beat Yorkshire champion Tom Cooper in the England Boxing Championship pre-quarter finals.

Coach Ian Archibald was thrilled with the performances of the trio.

“We had two seniors out at Morecambe on Saturday, and Lewis at the nationals on Sunday. They all won,” he said. “We are at Cleator Moor tonight, so it’s all systems go.”

Competing in Littleborough, Rochdale, Taylor faced Cooper from White Rose ABC and came away with the victory through a split decision.

Archibald said: “It was pretty close. He [Cooper] was pretty strong and kept holding Lewis but Lewis dug deep.

“I think the other lad won the first round but Lewis won the second and third. He boxes Liverpool’s Ben Longstaff tomorrow [in his quarter-final].”

Border City have previously had success nationally, with Jamie Rowland and Brodie Stephenson among the club’s former national champions.

“Lewis is improving with each fight. He is doing well,” Archibald added.

But Wigton ABC’s Robbie Pattinson and Jack Dixon, alongside Whitehaven and District ABC’s Paul Savage, were knocked out at the same stage of the competition.
