As Whitehaven look to win a League One play-off berth in their final game of the League One season on Sunday at York, who do you believe has been the stand-out player for Whitehaven this season?

Here is your chance to make your selection to win the Whitehaven News / News & Star Player of the Year. JOHN WALSH looks at five possible winners. Then it is all up to you to decide who wins.

CARL FORSTER

Only one place to start – with the man who has probably done better than he did last season when he won Coach of the Year.

Always led from the front and typical was the way he battered his way over for two tries and completed a hat-trick to win the tight game with Coventry.

Set to leave the club, but earned tremendous respect among his players and the club supporters.

MARC SHACKLEY

Appointed captain by Forster for the season and has always set a great example up front where it hurts.

Desire and determination have always been there as he has led the side with gusto, focused on the job in hand.

Signed a five-year contract during the winter to show his commitment to the cause and clearly going to be an important member of the 2019 squad.

DAN ABRAM

Anybody who kicks two pressure conversions from the touchline after the hooter has sounded, to win the two League One derby games, has to be included.

But it wasn’t just about his goal-kicking as he demonstrated at full-back, hooker or half-back he had plenty to offer with his all-round game.

Among a number of players who turned out regularly despite not being fully fit, another reason to applaud how well this squad has done this season.

DAVE THOMPSON

Will go down as one of Whitehaven’s shrewdest signings of recent years as he’s proved a key member of the squad.

Has scored 12 tries but has been close on several other occasions when his powerful running style has caused problems for all types of opposition.

His all-round ability has also been highlighted by stints in the pack when injuries have necessitated a switch.

DION AIYE

Goes into the last game of the regular season at York as Haven’s top try-scorer with 13.

But there’s been more to his try-scoring exploits as he’s demonstrated time and again at half-back or in the pack.

It’s been a remarkable effort by the Papua New Guinea who was laid low by pneumonia in Australia and as a consequence made a late start to the season.
