Workington Reds banked another £9,000 from Saturday’s 4-1 win at Knaresborough Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

They go into today’s draw when there is the potential to pick up £15,000 if they are successful and make the final qualifying round before the first round proper.

Joint manager Dave Hewson knew it was a potential banana skin but was relying on his team to show the right sort of professionalism that was needed in such a contest.

“I was really pleased at how the players responded because in the FA Cup there are always teams from a lower league who produce shocks," he said.

“We handled the situation very well and I just want the lads to enjoy their victory before we get back to league business tomorrow night.

“I thought the back four was outstanding and that was the basis for the side’s success while the quality of our four goals was excellent.

“If there was just one downside, it was the fact that they scored a consolation goal late in the game when we wanted to keep a clean sheet."

Conor Tinnion scored the first; laid on the second for Scott Allison while substitute Niall Cowperthwaite made the third for Jason Walker and fourth for Sam Joel with quality free-kicks.

Reds will be able to play their Evo-stik League Premier Division game at home to Marine on Tuesday night after the Merseysiders beat Frickley Athletic 1-0 in the FA Cup despite missing two penalties.

Tinnion, despite his major part in Saturday’s victory, is likely to be rested tomorrow night as Hewson and Lee Andrews continue to manage the player carefully as he battles a niggling knee problem.

Sam Smith is still recovering from a knee injury and will also be missing tomorrow, otherwise Hewson and Andrews should have a full squad to bring from.

One of the long-term injured, Josh Calvert, had a double hernia operation on Thursday and will be the next Reds player to make a comeback after missing all of the pre-season.

“He’s had the same operation as Goose [Dan Wordsworth] and Scotty [Allison] and they are back playing again so we hope it won’t be to long before Josh is back in training,” added Hewson.
