A fine weekend after heavy Friday rain threatened the Eden Valley Cricket League weekend programme produced some interesting results which have gone some way to determining where the league’s honours are going this season.

In the Premiership, Temple Sowerby hosted leaders Carlisle 2nds.

Put into bat, Temple Sowerby (155/10) stuttered along, losing wickets at crucial times against the Carlisle bowlers.

Michael Swindle (36) and Lee Stockdale (26) made a good start until Stockdale fell to a stunning Jordan Oultram catch. Drinks brought the down fall of James Farmer (23) and the innings petered out; Taryn Reay (4/45) and Oultram (3/34) best with the ball.

Carlisle (159/3) eased to victory; Jordan Whinn (72 not out) and Oultram (61) leading the way.

Stainton’s woes continued at Caldbeck.

Batting first, Caldbeck (151/10) with Mike Strong (44) and Kevin Pattinson (24) rescuing the home side from 80/6; Liam Mulholland (3/9) from his 10 overs. Thomas Graham (4/41) and Ben Dixon (3/47) causing the problems.

Stainton (69/10) were unable to cope with Callum Donald (5/24), Jack Proudlock (2/4) and Pattinson (1/8), losing by 82 runs.

Kirkby Stephen (201/9) beat Lanercost by 103 runs.

Charles Bowman (59) rescued a mid-innings collapse and took them to a competitive score; Jon Robley (3/44) and Simon Wardlow (3/58) best with the ball.

Lanercost (98/10) couldn’t come to terms with their target; Rob Hook (3/11) and Chris Scarr (2/17) causing the early damage from which Lanercost never recovered.

Threlkeld (144/6) beat Rockcliffe (106/10) by 38 runs. Unfortunately, no further details are available.

These results see Carlisle 2nds now in the driving seat with Kirkby Stephen their main threat for the Premier Division title. These two go head-to-head at Edenside on Saturday in a game which possibly will decide the league.

In Division One, Wigton 2nds and Scotby consolidated their positions with victories at the weekend.

Wigton (195/10), with Matthew Percival (55), beat a young Carlisle 3rds (132/10) by 63 runs.

Scotby (65/1) thrashed a depleted Appleby Eden (64/6) by nine wickets; Nick Rigg (3/15).

Elsewhere, Wetheral (187/7) beat Nunwick (103/10) by 84 runs.

After some early shocks, Richard Timperon (57) and Matthew Wood (53) took the home side to a respectable score; Adam Pattinson (3/40) doing the early damage.

Nunwick’s reply, likewise, stuttered early with only Ryan Veitch (34) offering much resistance as Wetheral’s seven bowlers shared the wickets.

Keswick 2nds (86/7), very much under-strength due to a club member’s wedding, were no match for Langholm.

Keith Richardson (40 not out), pressed into service yet again, top-scoring for the home side; Tony Steele (3/13) for the visitors.

Langholm (87/3) made short work of their target, winning in just 16 overs with a Nicky Piszczykiewicz (47) blitz.

Division Two sprang the surprise result of the day with Penrith 3rds, who have struggled to put sides out in recent weeks, beating second-placed Lanercost 2nds by 40 runs.

Penrith (194/9) with Nigel Fowles (62) and a late flourish from Joe Robinson (32); Paul Crabtree (3/10) and Ryan Proud (3/37) best with the ball.

Lanercost (154/10) lost early wickets and, with David Ferguson (47) gone, fell away to a surprise defeat.

Carleton continued on their merry way with a convincing seven-wicket win over Kirkby Stephen 2nds (115/10) who relied on Ian Cousin (58) for their total; Jim Litherland (4/47) the man in form.

Carleton (117/3) reached their target in just 13 overs with Lee Field (43 not out). Some revenge for their Junior Cup defeat earlier in the season.

Patterdale (62/0) heavily defeated Caldbeck 2nds (60/10) in a game that lasted just 30 overs; Dean Kelso (4/16) and James Hunter (4/23) taking Caldbeck apart.

Dean Kelso (40 not out) and Graham Lightfoot (14 not out) then raced to a 10-wicket win.

A young Temple Sowerby 2nds were no match for Appleby Eden 2nds on Sunday; Temple Sowerby (68/10) with Simon Palmer (5/22) to the fore. Acting skipper, David Overs (23 not out), best with the bat.

Appleby Eden (70/1) strolling to victory with Martin Brakewell (32 not out).

Sunday saw the Senior Cup festival hosted by Lanercost.

An exciting first game resulted in holders Caldbeck (112/8) beaten by six wickets by Lanercost (113/4); Ben Tickle (53) stood alone as wickets fell around him.

Skipper Ross Wilson (53) led from the front as Lanercost coasted home with nearly four overs left; Sean Merone (3/30).

In the second semi-final, Wetheral (89/9) were no match for Carlisle 2nds (90/1) with Oultram (42 not out) as the Premiership side cruised to victory.

This set-up an intriguing final.

Carlisle (142/6) choosing to bat first; Jordan Whinn (47). Would this be enough?

The Lanercost reply ebbed and flowed after a good start, the run-out of Lawrence Baldwin (41) crucial allied to some tight bowling by Oultram (3/17) which eventually had Lanercost just 12 runs short.

Oultram was adjudged man-of-the-match with Carlisle 2nds celebrating the first leg of what they hope will be a league and cup double.

There were no Sunday League games.
