An investigation has been launched into the cause of a fire in Maryport.

Firefighters from across north Cumbria worked through the night to tackle the blaze at a car wash at near the town's railway.

Crews from Whitehaven, Workington, Cockermouth, Aspatria and Carlisle were called at about 2.40am today.

An aerial appliance and the joint incident command unit were also at the scene.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: "It's looking like it's deliberate.

"There are suspicious circumstances. Police and fire were requested to attend."

He said the fire had been extinguished but investigators returned to the scene this morning.

Mealpot Road remained closed earlier.

Crews used two main jets, four hose reels, two ground monitors and the aerial appliance to extinguish the fire, which took around four hours.
