A cordon was lifted from the centre of Brampton last night following a small explosion.

A statement from Cumbria Constabulary stated that it was a "suspected small electrical explosion" on Front Street.

Police were contacted at 3.59pm yesterday with the report.

Officers were called to the scene with colleagues from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service whilst repairs were ongoing.

The fire service confirmed that smoke was seen coming from a grid when its crew arrived at the scene, close to St Martin's Church.

A statement from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service released this evening said: "It is believed to be a fault with an underground electrical supply.

"Crews were on standby with a hose reel and extinguishers. Electricity Northwest were called to isolate the supply."

Cumbria Constabulary's earlier statement had added that there was "no perceived risk to members of the public".

Police advised motorists to avoid the area due to heavy traffic congestion.
