Cumberland Council hope to fully reopen Ivegill Road by the end of December after a series of concerns about the closure were raised by local residents.
Ivegill Road is currently closed between Stoneraise Primary School and Durdar crossroads as part of the Carlisle Southern Link Road project.
The closure allows works to begin that will tie in the new road bridge to the existing road network. A fully signposted diversion route is in place.
However the ‘unexpected’ discovery of an uncharted rising main - which is a privately owned sewer - has held up progress on the road.
Cumberland Council said its project team is ‘working hard’ to identify its owner and find a solution.
The Council is also working with Stoneraise School to ‘explore options’ on how it can support it.
A spokesperson for Cumberland Council said: “We’ve heard your concerns about the disruption this closure has caused and understand the challenges many local residents are facing.
“Your patience during this time is greatly appreciated, and we’re committed to working through this together.
“The extended closure of the road is due to the unexpected discovery of an uncharted rising main (privately owned sewer).
“Our project team is working hard to identify its owner and find a solution. Unfortunately, until this is resolved, we’re unable to give a specific reopening date, but we will keep you updated as progress is made.
“We are also working closely with Stoneraise School to explore options as to how we can support.

“Our aim is to complete the works and fully reopen Ivegill Road by the end of December.
“Thank you again for your understanding and cooperation during this period. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us via email at carlislesouthernlinkroad@cumberland.gov.uk.
“We will continue to keep you informed of any developments.”
The Southern Link Road is expected to be completed in Autumn 2025.
