A Cumbrian man has completed on of the worlds greatest and most challenging treks in honour of his sister who died of cancer.
Calvin Adams, who grew up in Workington, decided to take on the challenge of waling across Gondogorro La pass in Pakistan, in the shadow of K2, after his sister Melanie received a terminal cancer diagnosis, fulfilling a lifetime dream while also raising money for Hospice at Home West Cumbria.
Mr Adams said: “I wanted to do it as a thank you for the support (the hospice) provided for Melanie.”
She died before he set off on his journey, which saw him cover 120km over two weeks, ascending the Baltoro Glacier and passing five of the world’s highest mountains.
Mr Adams said it was an honour to raise money for the hospice, and added: “The care and advice given to Mel and our entire family allowed Mel the dignity she deserved during her final struggles and allowed us all to be together at the end.”
He raised over £2,000 through this challenge, with the support of Melanie’s daughter Fiona Musgrave, who has been fundraising in her salon Truth Hair and Beauty in Workington.
Holly Harkness, community fundraising co-ordinator for Hospice at Home West Cumbria, said: “It is so rewarding to see how the care we provide across our community can make such an impact on the family of a patient, that they then decide to fundraise in their memory so that other local families can benefit from our services.”
