A new Compost Demonstration Site opens in Penrith this week, seeking to encourage home composting.

This is the third of its kind established in Westmorland and Furness, and is set to open today, September 3, at Basecamp North Lakes, home of Alpacaly Ever After.

Thanks to funding from Westmorland and Furness Council, and additional aid from Cumbria Action for Sustainability’s Community Fund, the site will educate the public on how to compost at home.

The site, 'gratefully provided' by Alpacaly Ever After and Basecamp North Lakes, will serve as a training ground for Garden Organic's volunteer master composters to explain the various composting systems.

Councillor Giles Archibald, Westmorland and Furness Council cabinet member for climate, biodiversity and environmental services, said: "I’m very pleased the council is supporting and helping to fund yet another compost demonstration site, this time in Penrith.

"By collaborating with our partners across the area, we are able to encourage and show more people how easy it is to compost at home."

The site is encouraging walk-ins today from 10am to 2pm, promising family-friendly activities like bug hotel construction, seed bomb making, pebble painting, and bird watching.
