EMERGENCY services were called to the aid of a lone walker battling hypothermia after a suspected asthma attack in poor weather conditions on Scafell Pike.

The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) and North West Air Ambulance Charity H08 responded to the call received at 4.51pm, August 25.

Despite windy, cold, and misty conditions, an advance party set out to provide immediate assistance.

The helicopter service however, was aborted due to adverse weather.

The walker was found by two other groups of walkers who offered their assistance before the rescue team arrived.

A spokesperson from Wasdale MRT said: "As further team members and equipment arrived the walker was treated and then packaged carefully into the team stretcher to minimise further heat loss.

"Heat packs, vapour barrier and winter casualty bag were applied. The stretcher carry was from a routine but lengthy location to Brackenclose, where a handover was made to the waiting land ambulance.

"We wish the walker well in his recovery.

"Our thanks to those who stayed on scene whilst team members were on their way, and especially to the two walkers who offered their own clothing and also stayed on in the team shelter in the initial stages.

"This increases the temperature in the shelter. The walker was also incredibly grateful to you," they said.
