FOR this Nostalgia edition we wanted to take a look at VJ Day.
Also known as Victory Over Japan Day, V-J Day is held every year on August 15 in Europe to remember the day Imperial Japan surrendered in WWII.
Subsequently, the surrender of Japan brought WWII to an end.
The Allies had warned Japan to surrender on July 28, 1945 but they refused. Due to their refusal the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, thus ending the war.
The first person to break the news of Japan’s surrender was U.S. President Harry S. Truman. He made the announcement at a press conference at the White House on August 14, 1945.
At midnight the UK’s Prime Minister Clement Atlee confirmed the end of WWII. He stated, “The last of our enemies is laid low.”
