The sewer system in Carlisle is facing an unusual problem – vapes.
United Utilities discovered more than 50 vapes this month, causing blockages at a pumping station in Dalston.
The vapes have put the sewer system at risk of fires as they contain lithium batteries.
In the past year, United Utilities have had to address more than 800 blockages in the area caused by items that shouldn't be disposed of into the sewer network.
Amongst the main culprits are wet wipes, cotton pads, nappies, roasting tin grease, and leftover food.
Andrew Kendall, wastewater lead for Cumbria at United Utilities, shed some light on this worrying trend.
He said: "The issue of vapes being disposed of into the sewer network is a trend that we’ve started to see over the last few years as they’ve grown in popularity.
"We’d like to remind people that they shouldn't be flushed down the loo or chucked down drains.
"Flushing only the three Ps – pee, poo and paper (toilet) keeps pipes flowing smoothly and ensures we can dedicate resource to improving other areas of the network."
Residents are being urged to check the guide for what can and cannot be disposed of into the pipes and drains to prevent this sewage chaos.
