It was the sort of moving moment which puts any defeat in perspective.

Carlisle United and their fans took part in a touching tribute to a tragic youngster at the Gillingham game.

Blues players, staff and supporters joined their Gillingham counterparts in a minute's applause for the seven-year-old at Priestfield.

Alfie's family were at the ground, wearing shirts with ALFIE 7 on the back as the emotional tribute was held in the 6,110 crowd, which included 475 travelling United fans, before kick-off in the game Gillingham won 1-0.

Alfie was tragically killed last month in an incident in a car park in his home town of Plymouth.

An inquest heard how the schoolboy was changing his footwear outside a rugby club when a car attempting to park collided with a parked vehicle.

The collision shunted the parked car forward and trapped Alfie against his family's car, causing him fatal crush injuries.

Alfie's family have described him as a "cheeky, fun and precious" boy.

A fundraising campaign to support Alfie's family has raised nearly £14,000.

A 55-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, and has been released on police bail until May.
