The News & Star readers have responded to a cherry tree being cut down which was found to be dangerous.

A tree that stood for decades at the entrance to a historic church garden in Whitehaven has been chopped down after the council ruled it was too dangerous.

The cherry tree, described as a “major asset” to St Nicholas’ Gardens in Whitehaven, has been cut down after an inspection by Copeland Council found it to be in a “seriously dangerous condition”.

Here's what you had to say.

Jolo Williamson said: "You could poke the centre of the cut-down trunk right in.

"It was well gone and was leaning over the path, the weight from the top as pulling the roots up and it'll Ave fallen over eventually. Hopefully, they'll plant another."

Sam Meteer said: "Given the aesthetic value of this sadly cut-down tree, I would have expected at least two qualified and experienced arborists to have produced reports on the health of the tree."

A statement from the parish of Whitehaven said they were “saddened” to see the tree come down but it had to be removed.
