A HUGE shipment of aid has set off from Appleby making its way to Syria to help those in need following the recent tragic earthquake.

Members of Appleby Sands Methodist Church, along with many other similar groups throughout the UK, have for some time helped Samara Aid continue to grow in its work supporting the most vulnerable in Syria - the recent tragedy has resulted in an urgent plea for further relief.

Donations of all types of new clothing and shoes together with toiletry items have been arriving at the two collection points in the town – the Tourist Information Centre and Appleby Business Centre.

Additional supplies have been donated from the surrounding villages, Kendal, other churches in the Eden Valley and as far afield as Argyll.

Both Appleby Primary and Grammar Schools have also been involved in the contribution.

Rev Andrew Sterling said: "It was brilliant to see so many people coming together to support this really important venture in a wide range of ways.

"As soon as word went out so many individuals, organisations and groups came forward, the result of which far exceeded our expectations.

Charity founder, Samara Levy said: “Over the last 9 years I have been working in and have walked through one of the most savage war zones of our generation.

"I am so grateful to the people of the Appleby area for their generosity which will make a real difference to people in the country," she said.

Co-ordinator Wendy Walker praised Stephenson's of Appleby and many other food shops who have kindly supplied the 60+ banana boxes in which the aid is transported using a van loaned by Eden Commercials.
