A SUSPENDED jail sentence has been handed to a banned Workington motorist who magistrates said showed a "deliberate disregard" for his disqualification.

Sean Ross, 32, pleaded guilty to the four offences he faced when he appeared before magistrates at Carlisle’s Rickergate court. Those offences, which were all committed on January 24 in Workington, were as follows:

* Driving while disqualified, which he did on the A597 at High Harrington, Workington.

* Failing as required to provide a blood specimen for analysis when police suspected him of an offence.

* Driving a Vauxhall Astra while uninsured.

* And wilfully obstructing a police constable.

After hearing the details, magistrates imposed a 16-week jail term but suspended the sentence for a year because they judged that there was a prospect that the defendant can be rehabilitated.

Magistrates also ruled that the defendant, of Coronation Drive, Salterbeck, Workington, must complete a Thinking Skills programme and up to 10 days of rehabilitation activity. He was banned from driving for 36 months.
