MORE people in Carlisle own their house outright than the national average, according to data from the 2021 Census.
A new tool created by the Office for National Statistics allows these Census data to be broken down into specific areas.
In the local authority district of Carlisle, 38.3 per cent were recorded as owning their house outright.
This figure is above the England and Wales average of 32.8 per cent.
However, in the 'built-up area' of Carlisle, which excludes rural areas and focuses solely on the city, a lower figure of 33.7 per cent owned their home outright.
In the same data set, it is revealed that in central Carlisle, 17 per cent socially rent their home, with this figure dropping to 14.4 per cent in the wider district.
Other household tenure figures showed that in 'built-up' Carlisle 30.4 per cent owned their home with a mortgage, loan or shared ownership.
This figure dropped slightly in the wider district to 29.7 per cent.
18.9 per cent also privately rented or lived rent free in their home in central Carlisle, with this dropping 17.6 per cent district wide.
