A drink-driver said he was ‘embarrassed’ and ‘ashamed’ after he was caught driving over the limit on the A596.

Adam Bowes, 25, was stopped by police while driving a BMW on the road in Harrington at 12.25am on November 26, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said a road traffic offence was alleged to have taken place prior to Bowes being pulled over.

Ms Fee said the defendant’s eyes were glazed and bloodshot and police could smell intoxicants.

He was arrested and taken to the police station.

Bowes gave a reading of 49mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

The defendant, who was unrepresented in court, said: “I would like to apologise for what I have done. I’m embarrassed and ashamed about it.

“I have no previous convictions. I have got a full, clean driving license.

“Thankfully there were no accidents.”

Bowes, of The Crescent, Thornhill, Egremont, pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle with alcohol level above the limit.

He was banned from driving for 14 months, to be reduced by 14 weeks, if he completes the drink drivers’ rehabilitation course.

The defendant was fined £480 and must pay £85 costs and a £192 victim surcharge.
